Summary

Accommodation

The relationship between aspects of self-determination and the use of assistive technology (AT) in postsecondary education was investigated.

Participants

A total of 12 national experts participated in a Delphi Panel and created an item bank of knowledge, skills, and beliefs surrounding AT. Panelists were chosen based on their reputation and/or their expertise in assessing AT services.

Dependent Variable

Researchers aimed to identify the indicators of students' self-determination that relate to AT acquisition and use in postsecondary settings.

Findings

Participants identified 39 self-determination indicators that impact AT use. The items identified as most likely to impact students' performance were students' understanding of their disability and how it impacts academic performance, knowledge of AT devices and features, and an understanding of how AT enhances students' ability to perform on specific tasks.
