Summary
Accommodation
The role that accommodations play in academic assessments for students with disabilities was examined. Rescheduling lessons, breaks, large print, Braille, assistive technology, extended time, flexible location, and signed administration were referenced.
Participants
Studies related to the following areas of research were reviewed: the philosophy of inclusion, inclusive curriculum, assessment procedures in inclusive contexts, strategies for assessment of students with special needs in inclusive contexts (including accommodations), and inclusive policies and assessment of students with disabilities.
Dependent Variable
Factors that may influence academic assessments in inclusive settings for students with disabilities were investigated.
Findings
The researcher concluded that assessments for students with disabilities are complex and varied; types of accommodations cannot be prescribed because needs vary widely. Therefore, it is important to have quality assurance systems in place to guarantee acceptable standards of accommodation implementation. Further, it is important for governments to design policies that ensure students with disabilities are fairly assessed and for assessment procedures to be coordinated with instructional processes. The researcher also advocates for training on inclusive teaching and assessments.
