Accommodation
Tenured science faculty members' perceptions of providing accommodations to students with disabilities were examined.
Participants
Thirteen tenured science faculty from postsecondary institutions throughout the U.S. participated.
Dependent Variable
Interviews were used to examine participants' experiences in providing academic accommodations for students with disabilities in a laboratory science setting.
Findings
Six themes emerged: 1) The importance of providing students with reasonable accommodations; 2) That the provision of academic accommodations is fair; 3) The concern that students using accommodations may not be preparing for future endeavors; 4) The perception that accommodations procedures are vague; 5) Legal obligations surrounding the provision of reasonable accommodations; and 6) The challenges faculty members face when providing discipline-specific accommodations.
