Participants

Students who are English language learners in grade 10 from a single school in Florida

Findings

A linguistically modified (simplified) test version was shown to increase EL student test scores significantly compared to the non-modified version (Cohen’s d 2.27 vs. 0.27). Note, there was no non-EL control group and the sample was a small (n=30) convenience sample. Given this the potential effects of this accommodation on non-EL students are unknown. Qualitative interview results indicated that students found the accommodated test easier to comprehend the questions and content.
