Summary
Accommodation
Accommodations were not specified; the focus was on how Jamaican college administrators provide accommodations for students with disabilities and what the administrators perceived to be barriers to providing accommodations.
Participants
Ten college administrators with at least five years of experience from 10 teachers’ colleges in both rural and urban Jamaica participated in interviews. Demographic and work experience data were collected and reported.
Dependent Variable
A face-to-face semi-structured interview protocol was used to interview participants individually.
Findings
To provide accommodations to students with disabilities, Jamaican college administrators reduced class sizes to meet students’ needs; modified the examination process; provided monitoring of students’ overall well-being; and conducted professional development workshops for staff. Barriers to providing accommodations included the limited number of trained special education staff; inadequate technology needed to meet students’ learning needs; and the absence of government funding to secure the resources needed to meet students’ learning needs.
