Accommodation
Key policies and laws related to supporting students with disabilities in postsecondary institutions were examined. Test-taking accommodations, classroom accommodations, and additional student support services provided to students in postsecondary institutions in Japan were outlined. Specifically, extended time, readers, assistive technology, note-taking assistance, auto-recorded lectures, alternative format texts, communication services, preferential seating, enlarged font study materials, and tutors/teaching assistants were discussed.
Participants
Five key informants involved in higher education participated, as did eight Japanese experts in disability, postsecondary education, and employment.
Dependent Variable
Interviews with the five key informants were conducted, and three study group meetings were facilitated with the eight Japanese experts. Additionally, a literature review and analysis of extant interview data were conducted. Key policies and laws in Japan about supporting students with disabilities in postsecondary institutions were reviewed.
Findings
Progress has been made in the development of policy, guidelines, and direction to support the implementation of the new disability anti-discrimination legislation.
