Summary

Accommodation

Testing accommodations were discussed broadly, with extended time on tests explicitly named.

Participants

Ten students with disabilities from an urban institution of higher education participated in interviews and journaling activities.

Dependent Variable

Semi-structured interviews were conducted individually via an online video platform. Documents from the Disability Resource Office at the institution were analyzed, as were participants’ journal entries, which were guided by researcher-developed prompts.

Findings

All ten students received extended time for exams as an accommodation. Students generally reported positive experiences with receiving extended time accommodations, noting that professors were generally willing to provide this support when students disclosed their disabilities through proper channels. They appreciated receiving extra time while still being treated equally to their peers in other aspects of their courses.
